The Islamic Golden Age - The Rise and Fall of Baghdad

Responding to demand, we developed and delivered these sessions during the summer of 2021. There was already a large stock of relevant artefacts in the collection, and we have added to them. We initially concentrate on Baghdad in the Islamic Golden Age, before looking at the Mongols, Genghis Khan, and the conquest of the city in AD 1258 by Hulagu Khan.

  • The development of Baghdad

  • Inventions, medicine, books, and calligraphy

  • Genghis Khan and the Mongols

  • Urban vs. nomadic culture

  • The fall of the city, and of the Abbasid Caliphate
